Hello Kristin,

Could you please forward a letter or something similar that we can post on our
member website (www.vfvma.org)? In this letter, you could reference links to
more information, application, liability information etc.
Basically, we are going to tell our members about these internships on our
website. It will be their option to offer them or not.

I have also left a message on your voice mail.

Thanks,

Aman Sukhija, DVM

Hi Jim,

The majority of the VFVMA Board have agreed to present your internship program
to our members. We will also post a information link on our member pages. To
be clear, our association cannot force any members to offer the internships
but we can tell them about the same. It will be up to the individual
veterinary offices to offer this to your students. With that said, I was
discouraged by the fact that all of the liability will fall on the veterinary
office, therefore, I don't know how many will go for this.
Regardless, telling the members about the internships does not make the
association liable for anything and we do not see any reason for not at least
trying perform this community service.

Next, please email me whatever information the school board would like for us
to post on our member website with any attachments and links that may be
relevant. I have carbon copied our incoming president, Dr. Debbie Ulbrich, on
this email. Please include her in any further communications.

Thanks,

Dr. Sukhija,

Thanks for meeting with me today to discuss possible veterinary internships
for selected science students at Atlantic High School. Your role as this
year's president of the county association for veterinarians will be crucial
in publicizing this exciting new possibility. I have attached the agreement
form we discussed and the 31-page handbook for potential mentors.

I will invite our school district coordinator, Tom Besaw, to contact you to
help explain the various concerns you expressed about liability.

This may take awhile to work out the details, but the students and your
colleagues will all benefit in the long run. These are important first steps.

Hi James,

As a practice owner, I think that veterinary externships for local high school
students are a good idea. I am assuming that your school would provide
details on what the goals are for each student, and what the veterinarian has
to provide for mentorship. Does the school have procedures in place for
handling externship work-place injuries and other liabilities?
Would the veterinarian be able to set minimal standards for externs. For
example, a student with a conviction for drug possession would be risk for a
veterinarian that carries controlled substances on premises.

I have personally done externships with success for veterinary technician
students, veterinary students, and a few for local high school students. I
also think that several other VFVMA members may participate in such a program.
Could you please send me details on liability issues and expectations of the
veterinarians? I can take your detailed proposal to our VFVMA Board for
discussion. Once approved, we would present the program to our members and
seek further ideas for enhancement. This would assure a wider selection for
your students.

Finally, please note that my term as President of the veterinary association
ends on December 31; so, I have carbon copied my response to our President-
Elect, Dr. Debbie Ulbrich. Please include her in your communications.

Thanks,

Dr. S. --

Thanks for this opportunity to explore an idea I've had for awhile.

I am the newly appointed director of a science academy at Atlantic High School
here in Port Orange. The name of our academy is the Horticultural,
Environmental, and Marine Science Academy, or HEMS. Our career-and-technical-
education courses--a requirement of an academy by state directive--have been
in our agricultural areas. I'm thinking it is time to branch out and offer
some more alternatives. For several years we have been making trips to
outdoor "adjunct classrooms" to allow our students the opportunity to see
science happen in a realistic setting. But the sameness of these experiences
was taking a toll on student interest. As we developed our first group of
seniors, for whom an internship with a government or business partner is a
requirement, we placed them at the Marine Discovery Center, and for some it
was a good fit. Also, we are securing a relationship with the City of South
Daytona to maintain their Sensory Garden on Olive Street, where our students
can see an application for their budding interest in horticulture. I am proud
of that new project as it is something we can point to with a community-action
twist to it.

But, and here's where you could be of some help, not all of us can become a
dolphin trainer at SeaWorld. As a practical matter, there are more
opportunities in the veterinary field as a career than as an oceanographer.
The school district has a mature and well-practiced protocol for placing and
documenting 12th-graders working a limited number of unpaid hours in a local
setting which would allow them to explore that career field as one that would
excite their interests long-term. If next year's crop of seniors could also
choose to explore a veterinarian career internship, I believe we would have a
more complete and balanced program. Participating veterinarians in this area
would also have an opportunity to perhaps find some future employees or even
future colleagues!

If this is something that you could help me iron out, even if it does not seem
to fit your personal situation, I think we could start now fleshing out how
this might actually be able to be in place for next summer.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this, and I see ultimately some roll for
the vet's professional organization at least in letting your colleagues know
we would be looking for placement opportunities for these fine young people.

Thank you for your time. If you would like to make time for a short personal
meeting, let me know a good time.
